Crown Woods School
Crown Woods School is the largest school in London, which will, by 2003, have 2,600 pupils, of which 600 will be in the Sixth Form. Following the appointment of a new Headteacher, and the re-organisation of the school, a policy was developed whereby all students were retained on site at lunchtime. This caused tremendous pressure on school catering, and the school decided that they should review their catering arrangements to meet future needs. AVL were retained to advise on future catering needs, write a specification, and tender out the service. Following an extensive tender exercise, a recommendation was made to appoint one of the country's largest contractors to run the service, and, in return for a 10 year contract, the contractor would invest over £100,000 and return a share of the income to the school. At the same time, a cashless system was introduced, which was funded by the contractor from the school's future return.
